A waypoint is a stop along the journey— a moment to get your bearings before moving forward.
Whether it's something new, something old that keeps coming up, or something feeling just out of reach—Waypoint Counseling is here to be a stop along your journey.
Hi, I’m Sarah Gokey, a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT). My approach is grounded in the belief that many of the things folks bring into the therapy room— overwhelm, shame, painful relationship patterns— aren't character flaws or personal failures. They often started as adaptations: ways of surviving environments or events that asked too much, or gave too little. And once we understand them as such, we can start making real change from a place of compassion and agency.
What I do, in broad strokes
I work primarily with individual adults. I'm a systems-thinker with a background in cultural anthropology— I tend to question the "shoulds" we're handed: what we're supposed to want, do, or who gets access to what. My lens is trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, gender-affirming, and anti-racist. I'm level 1&2 EMDR trained for those times when you might logically know something but the felt sense just isn't changing. I value transparency and will tell you why I'm asking something or zeroing in on a particular place. I’m a believer that humor has a place in therapy, but I know when it’s time to hunker down and dig in.
Who tends to find me
Many of my clients are late-diagnosed or newly-identified Autistic and/or ADHD and navigating what that means for identity, relationships, and a sustainable future. Many others are untangling family-of-origin patterns and the ways those early experiences keep showing up, whether folks want them to or not. Others are in a time of transition or hardship and our time centers on practical skill-building to healthfully come out the other side. I consider myself a generalist at heart, so if you’re bringing a different concern feel free to hop over to the “services” page to see a more detailed list of areas I support with, or drop me a line and I’m happy to chat.
